ACCESSORIES
Digital SLRs are system cameras: as well as lenses and flash units, there are
many other accessories which can extend the capabilities of the camera.
Nikon’s system is huge, and third-party suppliers offer even more options.

FILTERS
› Types of filter
› UV and skylight filters
› Polarizing filter
Some types of filter are virtually redundant
with digital cameras; the white balance
controls (page 80) have largely eliminated
the need for color-correction filters, which
were essential for accurate color on film,
especially transparency film.
Avoid using filters unnecessarily. Adding
extra layers of glass in front of the lens can
degrade the image and increase flare (see
page 191). There is one exception: keeping
a UV or skylight filter (see below) attached
to each lens provides a first line of defence
against knocks and scratches.
Filters can be attached to the lens in
several ways. The most familiar type are
circular filters which screw to the front
of the lens. The filter-thread diameter
(in mm) of most Nikon lenses is specified
in the table on pages 202–207, and usually
marked around the front of the lens next
to a Ø symbol. Nikon produces high-
quality filters in sizes matching Nikkor
lenses; larger ranges come from Hoya
and B+W.
If you use filters extensively, you’ll find
slot-in filters more economical and
convenient. The square or rectangular
filters fit into a slotted holder. One holder
and one set of filters can serve many
lenses, each of which just needs a simple
adaptor ring.
A few specialist lenses, including super-
telephoto, extreme wide-angle, and fish-
eye lenses, require equally specialist filters,
fitting either at the rear of the lens or by a
slot in the lens barrel.
Both of these filters cut out excess
ultraviolet light, which can make images
appear extremely blue. The skylight filter
also has a slight warming effect. They also
protect the front element of the lens.
The polarizing filter cuts down reflections
from most surfaces, intensifying colors in
rocks and vegetation, for instance. It can
make reflections on water and glass
