METERING MODES

Spot metering
In this mode the camera meters solely
from a small (3.5mm) circular area. This
circle is centered on the current focus
point, allowing you to meter from an off-
center subject. (This does not apply if
Auto-area AF (AF-A) is in use, when the
metering point is the center of the frame.)
Spot metering can be very useful when
an important subject is very much darker
or lighter than the background and you
want to be sure it is correctly exposed
SPOT ON
With brilliantly-lit clouds above, and deep
shadows below, contrast was very high.
Shooting in RAW, the camera was able to
capture detail in both the highlights and
shadows, but only if the exposure was exactly
right. Spot metering helped me strike that
balance. 50mm, 1/500 sec., f/11, ISO 200.
(matrix metering is more likely to
compromise between subject and
background).
