EDITING
The D5300 doesn’t shoot movies. Like all
movie cameras, it shoots movie clips. In
general, turning a collection of clips into
a movie that people actually want to see
requires editing, and specifically Non-
Linear Editing (NLE). This simply means
that clips in the final movie don’t have to
appear in the same order in which they
were shot. Digital editing is also non-
destructive—this means that it does not
affect your original clips (unlike cutting
and splicing bits of film in the “old days”).
During editing, you manipulate preview
versions of these clips and the software
merely keeps “notes” on the edit. At
the end, you export the result as a new
movie—remember that this can take a
long time to “render”.
› Software
Nikon now provides movie editing
software for Mac and Windows as part
of the View NX2 suite provided with the
camera. Nikon Movie Editor is a basic,
simple editing package but it handles
all the key tasks.
Other, more sophisticated options are
also available at no cost. Mac users have
iMovie, part of the iLife suite, included
with all new Macs. The Windows equivalent
is Windows Movie Maker, pre-installed with
Windows Vista, and a free download from
