FLASH ACCESSORIES
To add even more flexibility and control
of lighting effects, a wide variety of flash
accessories is available. Nikon has an
extensive range, and some third-party
suppliers offer even more, but when time
is short or money is tight substitutes can
often be improvized.
Battery packs
Nikon produces add-on power packs for
some of its Speedlights to speed up
recycling and extend battery life.
Color filters
Flash filters can be used to create striking
color effects, or to match the color of the
flash to that of the background lighting.
Nikon produces various filters to fit its
Speedlight range.
Flash cords
Because the D5300’s built-in flash can’t act
as a wireless commander, you can only
maintain full metering and control of an
external Speedlight if it’s physically
connected to the camera, either in the
hotshoe or using a flash cord (also known
as a sync lead). Dedicated cords like
Nikon’s SC-28 allow full communication
between camera and Speedlight, retaining
i-TTL flash control. The SC-28 extends up
to 8 feet or 2.5 meters.
Flash diffusers
Flash diffusers are a simple, economical
way to spread and soften the hard light
from a flashgun. They may slide over the
flash head or be attached by low-tech
means like elastic bands or Velcro. Sto-Fen
make Omni-Bounce diffusers to fit most
flashguns. Even a white handkerchief can
be used at a pinch (but beware, flash units
can get hot). Diffusers reduce the light
reaching the subject—the D5300’s
metering system will allow for this, but
the effective range will be shorter.
