FILTERS
› Neutral density filters
virtually disappear, restoring transparency.
Rotating the filter strengthens or weakens
its effect. The polarizer can also cut
through atmospheric haze (though not
mist or fog) like nothing else, and can
make blue skies appear more intense.
These effects are strongest when shooting
at right angles to the sunlight, vanishing
when the sun is directly behind or in front.
When used with wide-angle lenses, the
effect can vary conspicuously across
the field of view. You might only use it
occasionally, but some of its effects are
virtually impossible to reproduce by any
other means, even in post-processing.
Sometimes it can be priceless.
POLAR EXPLORATION
A polarizing filter can intensify colors and
accentuate clouds (as seen in the right side of
this composite image). 85mm, 1/250 sec. (left)
and 1/80 sec., f/11, ISO 200.
Neutral density (ND) filters reduce the
amount of light reaching the lens, without
shifting its color—hence “neutral”. ND
filters can be either plain or graduated.
