LIGHT AND EXPOSURE
In the end, getting the exposure “right”
isn’t about matching some technical
definition of what’s correct; it’s about
making sure that images look the way you
want them to look. However, you will
generally want to preserve detail in both
shadows and highlights as far as possible.
Most of the time, the camera does a
very good job of determining exposure,
and will almost always get results that are
close enough that you can make the final
adjustments in post-processing (especially
if you shoot RAW).
However, the times when it may fall
short are precisely the times when it
matters most: when you want to make a
really strong statement with an image, or
when the light and the elements are at
their most striking. This is when it really
DYNAMIC LIGHT
This is not so much a landscape as a skyscape—
yet try covering up the bottom of the image
and it’s clear that the land still adds depth,
context, and a sense of scale. However,
exposure was very much based on getting the
sky right—I was keen to retain highlight detail
but less concerned if the trees were effectively
black. 18mm, 1/250 sec., f/11, ISO 100.
