EXPOSURE MODES
The choice of exposure mode makes a
significant difference to the amount of
control you can—or can’t—exercise.
Exposure modes are selected from the
Mode Dial, with the addition of the
Command Dial for some more specialized
modes. The D5300 has a very wide choice
of Exposure modes, but they fall
conveniently into three main groups: Full
Auto modes, Scene modes, and User-
control modes. There’s also an EFFECTS
position on the Mode Dial for more
extreme or wacky results.
In Auto modes and Scene modes the
majority of settings are controlled by the
camera. These go beyond basic shooting
settings (shutter speed and aperture) to
include options such as release mode,
whether or not flash can be used, and
how the camera processes the shot.
The difference is that Full Auto modes
use compromise settings to cover most
eventualities while Scene mode settings
are tailored to particular shooting
situations.
User-control modes, by contrast, give
you complete freedom to control virtually
everything on the camera.
