THE EXPANDED GUIDE
FUNCTIONS » FOCUSING
(M) Manual focus
AF-C Continuous-servo AF
In this mode, recommended for moving
subjects, the camera continues to seek
focus as long as the shutter release is
depressed: if the subject moves, the
camera will refocus. The camera is able to
take a picture even if it hasn’t acquired
perfect focus (release priority).
The D5300 employs predictive focus
tracking: if the subject moves while
continuous servo AF is active, the camera
analyzes the movement and attempts to
predict where the subject will be when
the shutter is released.
CONTINUOUS AUTOFOCUS
AF-C is recommended for moving subjects.
50mm, 1/800 sec., f/4, ISO 3200.
MANUAL FOCUS
Key points in this image didn’t coincide exactly
with any of the AF points so I focused manually.
100mm macro, 1/200 sec., f/11, ISO 200, tripod.
When a camera has sophisticated AF
capabilities, manual focus might appear
redundant, but many photographers still
value the extra control and involvement it
offers. There are also certain subjects and
circumstances that can bamboozle even
the best AF systems. Manual focusing is a
straightforward process, which hardly
requires description: set the focus mode
to MF and use the focusing ring on the
lens to bring the subject into focus.
