SETTING THE SCENE
The camera can “explore” a scene like this,
either by panning around to see more of the
setting or by zooming in for a closer look.
But it wouldn’t do to zoom too far here, as
the center of the frame is occupied by foliage
(unless you can tilt the camera at the same
time—a hard act to pull off on anything but
a true video tripod).
camera on a solid tripod helps even more.
Zooming while handholding virtually
guarantees jerky zoom and overall
wobbliness. It’s also worth experimenting
to see which lens has the smoothest zoom
action. There’s definitely a gap in the
market for a lens with wide focal length-
range and powered zoom.
When zooming, remember that depth
of field (see page 60) decreases at the
telephoto end of the range. Your subject
may appear perfectly sharp in a wide-angle
view but end up looking soft when you
zoom in. Set focus at the telephoto end,
whether your planned shot involves
zooming out or zooming in.
› Lighting
For obvious reasons, you can’t use flash.
There are now many LED light units
specifically designed for DSLR-movie
shooting. The D5300’s ability to shoot
at high ISO ratings is also invaluable.
