The D5300’s built-in microphone gives
modest quality stereo output. It is liable to
pick up any sounds you make during
operation (focusing, zooming, even
breathing). You always have the option to
add a new soundtrack later. However, this is
difficult if your film includes people
speaking (though “post-syncing” is
standard practice in Hollywood, especially
for musicals). If you want to include dialog
or “talking heads”, keep subjects close to
the camera and ensure that background
noise is minimized.
Fortunately the D5300 also allows you to
attach an external microphone: plug it in
to a standard 3.5mm mini-jack socket
under the cover on the left side of the
