FLASH EXPOSURE
Whether the shutter speed is 1/200 sec. or
20 sec., the flash normally fires just once
and therefore delivers the same amount of
light to the subject. In the absence of
other light, the subject would look the
same whatever the shutter speed. Shutter
speed becomes relevant when there is
other light around, which we call ambient
light. Slower shutter speeds give more
chance for the ambient light to register.
Aperture, however, is relevant to both
flash exposure and ambient exposure. The
camera’s flash metering takes this into
account but it is useful to understand this
distinction for a clearer sense of what’s
going on, especially with slow-sync shots.
The combinations of shutter speed and
aperture that are available when using flash
depend on the exposure mode in use.
