Focus confirmation
When using a lens that does not focus
automatically with the D5300, you can still
take advantage of the camera’s focusing
technology thanks to focus confirmation.
It requires you to select an appropriate
focus point, as if you were using autofocus.
When the subject at that point is in focus,
a green dot appears at far left of the
Viewfinder data display. In P, S, and A
modes you can also use the exposure
display as a focus guide or rangefinder:
enable this using Custom setting a4
Rangefinder (page 116).
AF-area modes
The D5300 has 39 focus points covering
much of the frame (this area is indicated
by a faint outline in the Viewfinder).
To focus on the desired subject, it’s vital
that the camera uses appropriate focus
point(s); this is the function of AF-area
mode. Select AF-area mode in the
Active Information Display.
By default, the camera selects the focus
point automatically (Auto-area), but you
can always change to manual selection in
any shooting mode. However, the camera
only “remembers” this selection in P, S, A,
or M modes. If you change the default
setting in any of the Auto or Scene modes
it will remain in effect only as long as you
remain in that exposure mode. For
instance, if you switch from Portrait to
Landscape and then back again, you’ll find
that the camera has reverted to Auto-area.
Auto-area
In Auto-area, the D5300 selects the focus
point automatically, effectively deciding
what the subject is. When Type G or D
lenses are used, Face Recognition allows
the camera to distinguish a human subject
from the background. Determining what
the subject is seems a pretty basic
decision—and the other AF-area modes
let you do just that.
Single-point
In this mode, you select the focus area,
using the Multi-selector to move quickly
through the 39 focus points. The chosen
focus point is outlined in the Viewfinder.
This mode is best suited to relatively static
subjects, and marries naturally with AF-S
autofocus mode.
Dynamic-area AF
This mode is more complicated, as it has
