USING OPTIONAL SPEEDLIGHTS
Mounting an external Speedlight
1) Check that the camera and the
Speedlight are both switched off, and that
the pop-up flash is down. Remove the
hotshoe cover.
2) Slide the foot of the Speedlight into the
camera’s hotshoe. If it does not slide easily,
check whether the mounting lock on the
Speedlight is in the locked position.
3) Rotate the lock lever at the base of the
Speedlight to secure it in position.
4) Switch on both the camera and the
Speedlight.
Bounce flash and
off-camera flash
The fixed position of the built-in flash
throws odd shadows on nearby subjects
and makes portraits ugly. A hotshoe-
mounted Speedlight will improve things
slightly, but you can make a much bigger
difference by either:
1) Bouncing the flash light off a ceiling,
wall or reflector.
2) Taking the Speedlight off the camera.
Bounce flash
Bouncing the flash light off a suitable
surface both spreads the light, softening
hard-edged shadows, and changes its
direction, eliminating the flatness of direct
on-camera flash.
Nikon’s SB-910 and SB-700 Speedlights
have heads which can be tilted and
swivelled through a wide range, allowing
light to be bounced off walls, ceilings, and
other surfaces. The SB-400 has a more
limited tilt capability, allowing light to be
bounced off the ceiling or a reflector.
Tip
Most surfaces will absorb some of the
light, and in any case the light has to
travel further to reach the subject;
i-TTL metering will automatically
adjust for this, but the e ective range
is reduced. Bounce fl ash works better
in domestic interiors with fairly low
ceilings (especially if they are white or
light in color) than in larger spaces.
Alternatively, you can use a re ector.
