Operating the built-in flash
I-TTL BALANCED FILL-FLASH
i-TTL balanced fill-flash for DSLR gives a very
natural result; it’s not overly obvious that flash
has been used at all, but without it the interior
of the cave would be virtually black. 18mm,
1/200 sec., f/14, ISO 200.
THE BUTTON
The D5300’s built-in flash, like all such
units, is small, low-powered, and fixed in
position close to the lens axis. Together,
these factors mean it has a limited range,
and produces a flat and harsh light which
is unpleasant for portraits and most other
subjects. It’s certainly better than nothing
at times, but its real value is for fill-in light.
In
Auto, and many of the Scene
modes, the flash activates when the
camera deems it necessary (Auto flash),
though it can always be turned off. In
Auto (flash off), and certain Scene modes,
the built-in flash is not available. In P, S, A,
or M modes and
Food, the flash is
always available but you must activate it
manually as follows.
Standard i-TTL flash for DSLR
If spot metering is selected, this mode is
activated instead (it can also be selected
directly on some accessory flashguns). The
camera controls flash output to light the
subject correctly, but makes no attempt to
balance it with background illumination.
This mode is more appropriate when flash
is the main light source, rather than
providing fill light.
