› Panning
The panning shot is a movie-maker’s
staple. Often essential for following
moving subjects, it can also be used with
static subjects, for instance, sweeping
across a vast panorama. Of course,
landscapes aren’t always static, and a
panning shot combined with breaking
waves, running water, or grass blowing in
the breeze can produce beautiful results.
Handheld panning is very problematic;
it may be acceptable when following a
moving subject, but a wobbly pan across a
grand landscape will definitely grate. You
really, really need a tripod for this—and
make sure it’s properly levelled, or you may
start panning with the camera aimed at the
horizon but finish seeing nothing but
ground or sky: do a “dry-run” before
shooting.
Keep panning movements slow and
steady. Panning too rapidly can make
the shot hard to “read” and even leave
viewers feeling nauseous. Smooth panning
is easiest with video tripods, but perfectly
possible with a standard model: leave the
pan adjustment slightly slack.
ON THE LEVEL
When panning on a tripod, get it levelled
correctly in advance, or the train could
appear to be on a much steeper slope than
any normal railway.
