Cross Screen, however, is an enigmatic
name. It creates a “starburst” effect around
light sources and other very bright points,
like sparkling highlights on water. (Surely,
Star would have been a better name?)
There are multiple options within this item,
including the number, angle and length of
the star points.
MONOCHROME

Creates a copy with modified color
balance. When this option is selected
a preview screen appears and the Multi-
selector can be used to move a cursor
around a color grid. The effect is shown
both in the preview and in the histograms
alongside.
Image overlay allows you to combine two
existing photos into a new image. This can
only be applied to originals in RAW format.
Nikon claim that the results are better than
combining the images in applications like
Photoshop because Image overlay makes
direct use of the raw data from the
camera’s sensor, but this is debatable;
certainly, a large, calibrated computer
screen gives you a much better preview
of the result.
