› Perspective control lenses
Perspective control (PC or “tilt-and-shift”)
lenses give unique flexibility in viewing and
controlling the image. Their most obvious
application is in photographing architecture,
where with a “normal” lens it often becomes
necessary to tilt the camera upwards,
resulting in converging verticals (buildings
appear to lean back or even to one side).
The shift function allows the camera back to
be kept vertical, which in turn means that
vertical lines in the subject remain vertical in
the image. Tilt movements also allow extra
control over depth of field, whether to
extend or to minimize it.
The Nikon range features three PC
lenses, with focal lengths of 24mm, 45mm,
and 85mm. They retain many automatic
functions, but require manual focusing.
STRAIGHT-SHOOTING
Looking steeply up with a normal lens, the
convergence of vertical lines is obvious (right).
It can be corrected but this crops the image. A
perspective control lens (top right) avoids this.
