SCENE MODES
Scene modes are designed to tailor
camera settings to specific subjects and
conditions. Seasoned photographers may
disdain them, as they take many decisions
out of your hands. However, even the most
experienced may find them handy on
occasion, as a quick way to set the camera
for shooting a particular kind of image. If
you’re less experienced, you will find that
Scene modes are a good way to discover
how differently the camera can interpret
the same subject. This makes them a great
stepping stone to the full range of options
offered by the D5300. The first step is to
understand how the various Scene modes
work and to be aware of the difference
they can make in your images: an obvious
way to do this is to shoot the same subject
using different modes.
Scene modes control basic shooting
parameters such as how the camera
focuses and how it sets shutter speed and
aperture. They also determine how the
image is processed by the camera
(assuming you are shooting JPEG images,
see page 78). For instance, Nikon Picture
Controls (page 99) are predetermined. In
Portrait mode, for example, the camera
applies a Portrait Picture Control, which
gives natural color rendition and is
particularly kind to skin tones. Most Scene
modes also employ Auto White Balance
(see page 80), but in a few cases the White
Balance setting is predetermined to suit
specific subjects.
Five Scene modes are directly
selectable using the Mode Dial; eleven
more are selected by first setting the Mode
Dial to SCENE, then rotating the
Command Dial. The Information Display
activates and then, as you rotate the
Command Dial, the display cycles through
the eleven modes. For each one, a
thumbnail image gives an example of an
appropriate subject and the way it should
turn out when this mode is used. The
selection disappears after a few seconds;
turn the Command Dial again when you
need to reactivate it.
VIRTUAL MODE DIAL
A “virtual Mode Dial” appears briefly when you
first set the Mode Dial to SCENE.
