OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES / CAMERA SUPPORT
Screen shades
Camera LCD screens can be impossible
to see properly in bright sunlight. The
Viewfinder is much better for shooting
in bright light, but you can still need the
screen for Live View and especially for
shooting movies. Third-party companies
produce accessory screen shades—
probably the best-known name is
Hoodman. However, if you only need
one occasionally, you can improvise:
I have heard of people using the
cardboard core from a toilet roll.

CAMERA SUPPORT
There’s much more to camera support
than tripods, although these remain a
staple, of course.
Vibration Reduction (VR) lenses, plus the
D5300’s ability to produce fine images at
high ISO settings, do encourage
handholding, but there are still many
occasions when nothing replaces a tripod.
While light weight and low cost always
appeal, beware of tripods that simply aren’t
sturdy enough to provide decent support,
especially with longer lenses. A good
tripod is an investment that will last for
years. The best combination of low weight
with good rigidity comes (at a price) in
titanium or carbon fiber. Carbon-fiber
tripods are made by Manfrotto and Gitzo,
among others. My first Manfrotto carbon
tripod outlived several cameras and
indeed took me from shooting film into
the digital age.
When shooting movies, a tripod is
essential, and many tripods are designed
specifically for this purpose (see page 176).

SHY SUBJECTS
Backing away from the camera and firing the
shutter remotely can be a good approach with
shy subjects. 60mm, 1/80 sec., f/5, ISO 400.
