LED light
An alternative is to use LED lights, like the
Sunpak LED Macro Ring Light. Its
continuous output allows you to preview
the image in a way not possible with flash.
Its low power limits it to very close, and
usually static, subjects. But, then again,
it is cheap.

Macro flash
Specialist macro flash usually takes the
form of either ring-flash or twin flash.
Because operating distances are short,
units do not need high power and can
be relatively light and compact.
Ring-flash units encircle the lens, giving
even illumination even on ultra-close
subjects (they’re also preferred by some
portrait photographers). Nikon no longer
makes a ring-flash, but alternatives come
from Sigma and Nissin.
Nikon itself favors a twin-flash approach
with its Speedlight Commander Kit R1C1
and Speedlight Remote Kit R1. Both use
two Speedlight SB-R200 flashguns,
mounting either side of the lens. The
R1C1 uses a Wireless Speedlight
Commander SU-800 unit which fits into
the camera’s hotshoe, while the R1 needs
a separate Speedlight to act as
commander. These kits are expensive
but give very flexible and precisely
controllable light on macro subjects.
