USING OPTIONAL SPEEDLIGHTS
D5300 AND SPEEDLIGHT SB-700
If you’re serious about portrait or close-up
photography, in particular, you’ll soon find
the built-in flash inadequate. Accessory
flashguns, which Nikon calls Speedlights,
enormously extend the power and
flexibility of flash with the D5300. Nikon
Speedlights integrate fully with Nikon’s
Creative Lighting System for outstanding
results using flash. There are currently four
models, all highly sophisticated units
mainly aimed at professional and advanced
users, and priced accordingly. The flagship
SB-910 is particularly impressive—but costs
more than many Nikkor lenses.
Independent makers such as Sigma
offer alternatives, some of them also
compatible with Nikon’s i-TTL flash control.
However, such “dedicated” units are also
hardly cheap.
Many possibilities can be explored with
much cheaper flashguns. For instance, any
flashgun, however basic, that allows
manual triggering with a “test” button can
be used for the “painting with light”
technique outlined below.
You may have an old flashgun at the
back of a cupboard, and it’s always worth
checking the bargain bin at the local
camera shop.
Tip
Speedlights are greedy for battery
power. It is always wise to carry at
least one set of spares.
