APERTURE AND DEPTH OF FIELD
For other images you may want to try and
have everything sharp from front to back:
this is the traditional approach in landscape
photography, for instance. When you’re
shooting landscapes, which have no single
“subject”, where you place the focus point
in a scene can be quite important. You
can use “hyperfocal distance” calculators
or a rule of thumb such as “the far end
of the foreground”.
If you really want to maximize depth of
field, you need to try and stack all three
key factors (focal length, aperture, and
distance) in your favor. This isn’t always
possible and you may have to decide
which area is more important—foreground
or background.
CLASSIC LANDSCAPE
This is a demonstration of the classic landscape
photographer’s approach: wide-angle lens, small
aperture, and focus point in the middle ground.
