IMAGE ENHANCEMENT
The D5300 offers two main kinds of
in-camera image adjustment and
enhancement. First, certain settings can
be applied before shooting an image
(pre-shoot controls).
Second, changes can be made to
existing images on the memory card
(post-shoot options); access these from
the Retouch Menu (see page 126).
Pre-shoot controls
Basic settings like exposure and white
balance are crucial for the final image.
The D5300 offers several other ways to
influence how the image will look, notably
with Nikon Picture Controls and Active
D-Lighting.
Tip
Picture Controls and Active
D-Lighting have a direct e ect on
JPEG images. When shooting RAW
les, they have no eff ect on the basic
raw data. However, they do a ect
the appearance of preview/playback
images, so appropriate settings can
still be helpful.
Active D-Lighting
Active D-Lighting enhances the D5300’s
ability to handle scenes with a wide range
of brightness (dynamic range). Essentially,
it reduces the overall exposure in order to
ACTIVE D-LIGHTING COMPARISON
The shot with ADL Off (top) loses a lot of its
impact due to the bleached-out sky. With ADL
set to Extra high (above) the image looks darker
overall but retains detail into the shadows.
