Note :
Energy-saving bulbs, which
have largely replaced traditional
incandescent (tungsten) bulbs,
are compact fluorescent units.
Their color temperature varies but
many of those in domestic use are
rated around 2700°K, equivalent
to Fluorescent setting 1 Sodium-
vapor lamps. In case of doubt,
it’s always a good idea to take test
shots if possible, or allow for later
adjustment by shooting RAW files.
Tip
If images consistently appear color-
shifted on your computer screen,
compensating by adjusting the
camera’s white balance is probably
not the answer; the problem may
well be with the computer screen
settings (see page 222).

Color space
Color spaces define the range (or gamut)
of colors which can be recorded. Like most
DSLRs, the Nikon D5300 offers a choice
between sRGB and Adobe RGB color
spaces. The chosen color space will apply
to all shots taken in all exposure modes. To
select the color space, use the Color
space item in the Shooting menu.
sRGB (the default setting) has a
narrower gamut but images often appear
brighter and more punchy. It’s the standard
color space on the Internet and in photo
printing stores, for example, and is a safe
choice for images that are likely to be used
or printed straight off, with little or no
post-processing.
Adobe RGB has a wider gamut and is
commonly used in professional printing
and reproduction. It’s a better choice for
images that are destined for professional
applications or where significant post-
processing is anticipated. However, images
straight from the camera may look slightly
dull on most computers and web devices
or if printed without full color
management.
