Some older lenses, specifically pre-AI
lenses, should not be used as they can
damage the camera. Certain other
specific (and uncommon) lenses
should also be avoided—see the
Nikon Reference Manual. At the time
of writing there are reports of
compatibility issues between the
D5300 and many Sigma lenses,
affecting both AF performance
and image stabilization. To fix this
requires a lens firmware update.
Newly-purchased lenses should
have current firmware.

set aperture and shutter speed using an
external meter or by trial and error, and
use Image review (page 108) to check
exposure. When using flash or indoor
lighting, the same settings can often
be used repeatedly.

or materials. As these are referred to

207, brief explanations of the main terms
and acronyms are given here.
Abbreviation Term Explanation
AF Autofocus Lens focuses automatically. The majority of current
Nikkor lenses are AF but a substantial manual focus
range remains.
ASP Aspherical Precisely confi gured lens elements that reduce the
Lens Elements incidence of certain aberrations. Especially useful
in reducing distortion with wide-angle lenses.
CRC Close-range Advanced lens design that improves picture quality
Correction at close focusing distances.
D Distance Types D and G lenses communicate information
to the camera about the distance at which they
are focusing, supporting functions such as 3D
Matrix Metering.
