NIKON CAPTURE NX2
For a wider range of editing options,
especially in relation to RAW files, Nikon
Capture NX2 (optional purchase) or one of
its third-party rivals is essential. Unlike rivals
such as Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop,
Capture NX2 cannot open RAW files from
non-Nikon cameras. Capture NX2 has a
quirky interface; some love it, others just
can’t get on with it, and in any case you’ll
need another app for cataloging.

4) To export the file as a TIFF or JPEG that
can be viewed, edited, and printed by
other applications, choose Convert Files
from the File menu. You can resize and
rename the image too.
5) The File Format menu in the Convert
Files dialog offers three options (see the
table on the previous page).
Camera Control Pro 2 is a professional
product at a professional price, and allows
you to control the D5300 directly from a
Mac or PC (“tethered shooting”). As
images are captured you can check them
in detail on the large, color-corrected
computer screen; Live View integration
allows real-time viewing. It requires a
physical connection.
An Eye-Fi card looks and operates like
a conventional SD memory card, but
includes an antenna which allows it to
connect to WiFi networks, allowing you
to transfer images wirelessly. Some Eye-Fi
cards also support ad-hoc networks,
allowing images to be transferred to a
laptop or iPad when out of the range
of regular WiFi.
Eye-Fi software is installed by plugging
the card into any WiFi-enabled Mac or PC;
that computer becomes the default
destination for Eye-Fi upload. The card can
then be inserted in the camera; use Eye-Fi
Upload in the Setup menu to enable
transfers. When out of range of your
network, turn Eye-Fi off to save battery
power. The card still functions as a regular
memory card.
