Note:
Most digital video cameras claim
enormous zoom ranges (often 800x
or more) but these are only achieved
by “digital zoom”, which is a software
function that enlarges the central
portion of the image—inevitably
losing quality. “Optical zoom” range
is what matters, and interchangeable
lenses give a potential range of at
least 80x (10mm–800mm). The widest
range currently available in a single
lens is 18–300mm.
WIDE VIEW
The D5300 allows wide-angle shooting.
many accessory grips and supports to
improve handling and stability.
Also, Live View AF is nowhere near
agile enough for fast-moving subjects,
and sound quality from the built-in
microphone is at best moderate (see
page 174).
There’s one other limitation: you
cannot record a clip longer than 20
minutes in High quality or 30 minutes in
Normal quality. This is hardly ever a
problem—and for those who have to view
your movies, 20 minutes will seem like a
very long time for a single clip!
