Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE)
Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) is an IPpacket encapsulation protocol that allow for networks
and routes to be advertized from one network device to another. You can use GREto encapsulate a
wide variety of network layer protocolsinside virtual point-to-point linksover an IPnetwork.
Configuring a GRE tunnel
Configuring a GRE tunnel involvesthe following items:
Required configuration items
n
AGREloopback endpoint interface.
n
GREtunnel configuration:
l
Enable the GREtunnel.
The GREtunnelsare enabled by default.
l
The local endpoint interface.
l
The IPaddressof the remote device/peer.
Additional configuration items
n
AGREkey.
n
Enable the device to respond to keepalive packets.
Task One: Create a GREloopback endpoint interface
Web
1. Log into Digi Remote Manager, or log into the local Web UI asa user with full Admin access
rights.
2. Access the device configuration:
Remote Manager:
a. Locate your device as described in Use Digi Remote Manager to view and manage your
device.
b. Click the Device ID.
c. Click Settings.
