Two GARD’s equipped with Ethernet TPS Modules can provide the link between IEC 61850
compliant substations. The sending GARD retrieves GOOSE messages from the substation LAN and
puts trip messages on its communication link to the remote GARD. The receiving GARD then
translates the trip messages back to GOOSE to be put on the substation LAN.
A new IEC 61850 substation needs to interact with a conventional substation at remote line ends. In
this case the Ethernet TPS Module retrieves GOOSE messages for transfer trip or pilot relaying
operations from the IEC 61850 substation LAN. The GARD then transports these messages over any
communication link supported, to the GARD at the remote end substation which performs normal
teleprotection functions.
Where two conventional substations need to perform pilot relaying and teleprotection functions over
an Ethernet network, a GARD at each end can send GOOSE messages over the network for
intertripping.
The Ethernet TPS Module is Hot Swappable and can be installed in any free rear slot in the 3U or 6U
GARD chassis.
14.2 INSTALLATION
Verify that Jumper J6 at the top of the Ethernet TPS Module is set for the correct station battery input
voltage. If your Ethernet TPS Module was supplied as part of a GARD system carefully slide out the
module to expose Jumper J6 as shown below. After verifying or changing the jumper setting carefully
re-seat the module, do not use excessive force as this may damage the connector. All other jumpers on
the Ethernet TPS Module are factory set and should not be changed.
