MAINTENANCE AND S ERVICING
Replace the secondary air lter (A) every year or after every
third primary lter change (even if it appears clean).
If the secondary air lte r is dirty, inspect the primar y
lter and the lter canister to determine the reason for
contamination.
•Examinethelter canister for cracks and replace
if necessary.
Ensure lter sealing surfaces are soft, exible, and
sealing properly. Hard seals m ay allow debris through
to the second ary lter.
Ensure canister retaining latches are secure.
IMPORTAN T:
•DoNOT remo
ve the secondary lter element unles s it
needs repl

8. Clean the inside of the canister housing and end cap carefully. Dirt left in the air cleaner housing may be harmful
to your engine.
Remove hardened
dirt ridges wherever lter gaskets contact the cleaner housing.
•Cleanthegasket
sealing surfaces of the housing. An improper gasket seal is one of the most common causes
of engine conta
mination.
Wipe every surf
ace clean with a clean, water-dampened cloth.
Check the housi
ng visually to make sure it is clea n before putting in a new lter element.
9. Check for uneve
n dirt patterns on old element. It is a valuable clue to potential dust leakage or gasket sealing
problems. A pa
ttern on the element clean side is a sign that the old element was NOT rmly sealed or that a
dust leak exis
ts.
Press on the fresh gasket to see if it springs back.
Check the ga sket for corre ct sizing. On a radia l seal element the gasket surfa ce is th e inside diamete r of the
open end cap.
Make sure the gasket is seating evenly. If the gasket is not forming a perfect seal, you will NOT
have protection.
Ensure the sealing surface in the housing is clean, and the lter element is the correct model number. It may
be too short for the housing.
Identify and rectify the cause of any leaks before replacing the lter element.
10. If required, also change the secondary lter. Refer to Removing a nd Installing S econdary Air Filte r, page 344.
