Windshiftdata
AsTrueWindDirection(TWD)isconstantlychanging,thepositionofthe
laylineschangesovertime.Thesechangesareshownaslightercolored
shadedtriangleswhichrepresentthevariationofTWDoveraspecifiedtime
period.
WithTWDholdingatthehighendofitsrangeofvariation,thevesselcan
tacktostarboardandwilllaythewindwardorleewardmarkasitenters
theshadedarea.However,ifTWDshiftsbacktowardsthelowerendofits
rangeofvariation,thevesselwillfallshortofthelaylineandmayhaveto
performextratackstoreachthewaypoint.
WithTWDholdingatthelowendofitsrangeofvariation,thevesselcan
tacktostarboardandwillonlylaythewindwardorleewardmarkwhenit
reachestheendoftheshadedarea.However,ifTWDshiftsbacktowards
thehighendofitsrangeofvariation,thevesselwilloverstandthewindward
orleewardmarkandmayneedtotravelfarthertoreachthewaypoint.
Dependingonthesituation,thenormalcourseofactionwouldbetotack
whenthevesselishalfwaythroughtheshadedarea.Howeverthismay
notbetheshortestorquickestroute.
