15.3Laylines
Laylinesareusedinsailingtoshowhowfarthevesselmustsailonthe
currenttackinordertomakeatargetwaypointaftertacking,givenpresent
windconditions.
Whenalaylineisusedtocalculatetheroutetoawaypoint,itwilltakeinto
accountanumberoffactorstoprovideabetteralternativecourse,compared
tosimplynavigatinginastraightlinetoawaypoint.
Thereasonwhylaylinesareamoreefficientwaytosailtoaspecificpoint
isbecausethey’rebasedonTrueWindDirection(TWD)andeither:a)fixed
upwind/downwindsailingangles,orb)theuseofpolarstoreflectthe
performanceofyourparticularvessel.Inthisrespect,sailingalonglaylines
maximizesyourVelocityMadeGood(VMG)towindward.Anotherreason
whylaylinesaremoreaccurateisbecausetheycanalsobeconfiguredto
accountfortidalcurrent,aswellastheleewayofyourvessel.
Toensurethelaylinecalculationsareasaccurateaspossible,it’simportant
toensurethatthefollowingsettingsarecorrectlyconfigured:
