Respirationcautions

only)orturnofftheimpedancerespirationmeasurementon
themonitor.
Respirationmeasurementlimitations
●PSM:Impedancerespirationisintendedforpatientsoverthreeyearsold.
●Electricaldevices,suchaselectrosurgeryunitsandinfraredheaters,thatemit
electromagneticdisturbance,maycauseartifactsordisabletherespiration
measurementcompletely.
●Movementartifacts,shivering,andinterferencefromtheheartmayinterferewith
therespirationmeasurement.
Respirationpointstonote
●Connectonlyoneimpedancerespirationmoduletothemonitorsimultaneously.
●Donotplaceelectrodesonobviouslayersoffat,ormajormuscles.
●Makesuretheelectrodegelismoist.
●Makesureelectrodeshavegoodskincontact.
●Dependingontherespirationmoduleused,notallrespirationmeasurementsand
settingsareavailabletovieworchange.
●SincerespirationmonitoringissocloselylinkedwithECGmonitoring,patient
preparationandelectrodeplacementareimportant.
●Intermittentmechanicalventilation:Duringspontaneousbreathingtheventilator
mayattimessupportthepatient’sventilationwithanextrainspiration.Ifthese
ventilatorinspirationsaresubstantiallylargerthanthespontaneousbreaths,the
respirationcalculationmaymistakenlycountonlytheinspirationsandexpirations
producedbytheventilator.
