Non-invasivebloodpressure
CAUTION
Devicesthatexertpressureontissuehavebeenassociated
withpurpura,skinavulsion,compartmentalsyndrome,
ischemia,and/orneuropathy.Tominimizethesepotential
problems,especiallywhenmonitoringatfrequentintervals
oroverextendedperiodsoftime,makesurethecuffis
appliedappropriatelyandexaminethecuffsiteandthelimb
distaltothecuffregularlyforsignsofimpededbloodow.
Periodicallycheckpatientlimbcirculationdistaltothecuff.
CheckfrequentlywhenusingautoNIBPin1and2minute
intervals.The1and2minuteintervalsarenotrecommended
forextendedperiodsoftime.
NIBPmeasurementlimitations
Apatient'svitalsignsmayvarydramaticallyduringtheuseofcardiovascular
agentssuchasthosethatraiseorlowerbloodpressureorthosethatincrease
ordecreaseheartrate.
AlthoughautomatedNIBPisgenerallysafeandaccurate,ithassomelimitations.It
maybedifculttoobtainreliablereadingsunderthefollowingcircumstances:
Shockaccompaniedbylowbloodpressureandpulse.
Variationsinbloodpressureandpulserate.
Inpatientswithanatomicabnormalities,suchascalcied(hardened)arteries
orsubclaviancompression.
Compressionofthecuffcausedbyshivering,seizures,armmovement,or
bumpingagainstthecuff.
Propersizingandpositionofthecuffareessentialtoobtainingreliablereadings:
Toolargeacuffisbetterthantoosmallacuff,whichmayyieldfalselyhigh
readings.
Thecuffshouldalsotproperlyoverthebrachialartery(orwhateverarteryis
beingused)sothatthecuffissufcientlysensitivetovibrationsintheartery.
NIBPpointstonote
Thisequipmentissuitableforuseinthepresenceofelectrosurgery.
UsetheappropriatesizeNIBPcuffforthepatient(adult,child,orinfant).
NIBPcanbemeasuredbymultipleacquisitionmodules.ConnectoneNIBPcable
only.
DependingontheNIBPmoduleused,notallNIBPmeasurementsandsettings
areavailabletovieworchange.
Themeasurementsite,patient’sposition(standing,sitting,lyingdown),exercise,or
physiologicconditioncanaffecttheNIBPreadings.
Withmobilepatientsandwhentakingroutinerestingbloodpressure,ensurethat:
Thepatientiscomfortablyseated,withtheirlegsuncrossedandfeetaton
theoor.
Thepatient’sarmsandbackaresupported.
Themiddleofthecuffisattheleveloftherightatriumofthepatient’sheart.
Alsoconsiderthefollowingrecommendations:
Allow5minutestopassbeforetakingtherstmeasurement.
