CAUTION
Devicesthatexertpressureontissuehavebeenassociated
withpurpura,skinavulsion,compartmentalsyndrome,
ischemia,and/orneuropathy.Tominimizethesepotential
problems,especiallywhenmonitoringatfrequentintervals
oroverextendedperiodsoftime,makesurethecuffis
appliedappropriatelyandexaminethecuffsiteandthelimb
distaltothecuffregularlyforsignsofimpededbloodow.
Periodicallycheckpatientlimbcirculationdistaltothecuff.
CheckfrequentlywhenusingautoNIBPin1and2minute
intervals.The1and2minuteintervalsarenotrecommended
forextendedperiodsoftime.
NIBPmeasurementlimitations
●Apatient'svitalsignsmayvarydramaticallyduringtheuseofcardiovascular
agentssuchasthosethatraiseorlowerbloodpressureorthosethatincrease
ordecreaseheartrate.
●AlthoughautomatedNIBPisgenerallysafeandaccurate,ithassomelimitations.It
maybedifculttoobtainreliablereadingsunderthefollowingcircumstances:
￭Shockaccompaniedbylowbloodpressureandpulse.
￭Variationsinbloodpressureandpulserate.
￭Inpatientswithanatomicabnormalities,suchascalcied(hardened)arteries
orsubclaviancompression.
￭Compressionofthecuffcausedbyshivering,seizures,armmovement,or
bumpingagainstthecuff.
●Propersizingandpositionofthecuffareessentialtoobtainingreliablereadings:
￭Toolargeacuffisbetterthantoosmallacuff,whichmayyieldfalselyhigh
readings.
￭Thecuffshouldalsotproperlyoverthebrachialartery(orwhateverarteryis
beingused)sothatthecuffissufcientlysensitivetovibrationsintheartery.
NIBPpointstonote
●Thisequipmentissuitableforuseinthepresenceofelectrosurgery.
●UsetheappropriatesizeNIBPcuffforthepatient(adult,child,orinfant).
●NIBPcanbemeasuredbymultipleacquisitionmodules.ConnectoneNIBPcable
only.
●DependingontheNIBPmoduleused,notallNIBPmeasurementsandsettings
areavailabletovieworchange.
●Themeasurementsite,patient’sposition(standing,sitting,lyingdown),exercise,or
physiologicconditioncanaffecttheNIBPreadings.
●Withmobilepatientsandwhentakingroutinerestingbloodpressure,ensurethat:
￭Thepatientiscomfortablyseated,withtheirlegsuncrossedandfeetaton
theoor.
￭Thepatient’sarmsandbackaresupported.
￭Themiddleofthecuffisattheleveloftherightatriumofthepatient’sheart.
