Gasexchangepracticalities
Asteadystateconditionshouldbepresenttoensurethatthegasexchange
measurementisequivalenttothetissuegasexchange.Inaddition,different
physiologicalfactorsmayaffectthestabilityofthepatient:achangeinthebreathing
pattern,lungvolume,deadspaceorcirculatorystatusinducesanabruptchange
intheinspiratoryandexpiratorygasconcentrations.Thesefactorsalsodetermine
howfastthemeasurementstabilizes.Thepatientshouldbemotionlessandwith
consistentrespiratoryratesandvolumes.
Althoughgasexchangecanbemeasuredoverashortperiodoftime,aperiodofat
least20to30minutesispreferable.Byprolongingthemeasurementperiod,more
validinformationontheaveragegasexchangecanbeobtained.
Severalvariablescancontributetoinaccurateinformation.Toensurecorrect
measurement,keepthesepracticalconsiderationsinmind:
●Samplingline.
■Toensurecorrectmoduleinitialization,alwaysconnectthesamplinglineand
theD-fendtothemodulebeforeturningonthemonitororconnectingthe
moduletoamonitorthatisalreadyon.
■Useacorrectsamplinglinelength.Samplinglinesrequirespeciclengthsand
diametersforaccuratereportingofgasandow.GErecommendsusingonlya
2-m(7-ft)samplingline.
●Freetubingwithnoobstructions.
■Checkthatthereisnowater(activehumidity,secretions)orkinkedtubingina
line.
●Measurementcalibrationandaccuracy.
■Toensuremeasurementaccuracy,checktheaccuracyofairwaygas
measurementonceamonth.
■Makesureyouareusingcorrectcalibrationgas.
■Ensurethatthecalibrationgasandregulatorarefunctioningproperlybefore
calibration.Donotwashordisinfectcalibrationgassamplinglines.
