Venousstasispressuremaybelowerthanthevaluesaboveifthepatienthaslow
bloodpressure.Thevenousstasispressureadaptstothemeasuredmeanpressure
beingapproximatelythesameasthemeanpressurebutalwaysatleastthefollowing:
Adult:40±5mmHg(5.3±0.7kPa)
Child:30±5mmHg(4.0±0.7kPa)
Infant:20±5mmHg(2.7±0.7kPa)

NIBPcuffselectionandplacement
Alwayschoosetheappropriatebloodpressuremeasurementsite.Inadultand
childpatients,theupperarmispreferredforconvenienceandbecausenormative
valuesaregenerallybasedonthissite.Whenfactorsprohibituseoftheupperarm,
theclinicianmustplanpatientcareaccordingly,takingintoaccountthepatient’s
cardiovascularstatusandtheeffectofanalternativesiteonbloodpressurevalues,
propercuffsize,andcomfort.
AdultandchildInfant
Alwaysmeasurepatient’slimbandselectappropriatelysizedcuffaccordingto
sizemarkedoncufforcuffpackaging.Whencuffsizesoverlapforaspecied
circumference,choosethelargersizecuff.
Ifpatientisstanding,sitting,orinclined,ensurethatcuffedlimbissupportedto
maintainthecuffatlevelofpatient’sheart.Ifthecuffisnotatheartlevel,the
differenceinthemeasuredpressurevaluesduetohydrostaticeffectmustbe
considered.
