1. Unit / Board incl. Bootloader
The hardware, e.g. IPC or PSM board. Each unit/board described in Fig. 3-52contains a bootloader.
The function of the bootloader is to set-up the hardware. The bootloader is installed before delivery
of the spare part.
2. Flash loader
Each unit/board described in Fig. 3-52also contains a flash loader, the function of the flash loader is
to take care of application loading. The flash loader is installed before delivery of the spare part.
3. Variable (Labels)
All units/boards in the S6 contains variables (Labels) with specific information for each module such
as EDM offset for the distance unit.
Firmware upgrades of modules is done without losing instrument calibration data, these data,
variables will not be affected by the upgrade since they are stored in a memory location not affected
by the application firmware upgrade.
4. Application firmware
The operating software for each module.
Application firmware upgrade
Upgrade of application firmware is done in one package. The package includes firmware for all units
in the S6 instrument. An automatic upgrade procedure installs all firmware’s included in the package.

Software configuration key
The instrument contains three software configuration numbers (twelve digit numbers) that activates
functions/options in the instrument. The numbers are updated in the function Set configuration
number in Maintenance & Service tab in PASS, see page 6-201.
Firmware Compatibility
The tables below describes the compatibility between the instrument firmware and the control unit
field software.
