Tracker Long Range - TLR
The Trimble S8 Total Station is equipped with Autolock technology, which is used for a robotic or a
conventional measurement with Autolock. Autolock technology controls the instrument servos and
aims the instrument correctly towards the target.
Trimble S8 series offers an additional option, Long-Range FineLock (Long Range Tracker). This
option includes an additional Long Range tracker transmitter. Useful feature for monitoring
applications with long distance measurements.
The Long Range tracker transmitter replaces the Tracklight module. The OTC board is modified to
handle two tracker transmitters, Long Range tracker transmitter and standard tracker transmitter.
Only one of the two tracker transmitters can be in use but the quadrant tracker receiver is the same.
Survey Controller functionality
FineLock is supported in Survey Controller version 12.20 or higher. From version 12.42 FineLock
control can be run from Trimble Functions menu.
Long Range FineLock is supported in Survey Controller version 12.42 or higher.
When using FineLock and Long Range FineLock function the instrument will lock on the target
during measurement, after measurement it will release the target lock function. It is designed for
monitoring function and not to follow moving targets.
Long Range FineLock
The Trimble S8 Total Station is equipped with FineLock technology. Similar to Autolock, FineLock
technology is used to automatically aim the instrument towards a target, however in FineLock mode
the instrument uses only the fine detectors of the quadrant tracker receiver, the coarse detectors are
switched off. This makes it possible to position targets closer to each other especially useful in
engineering applications such as monitoring and tunnelling where multiple targets with very tight
spacing are used.
Long Range FineLock works in the same way as FineLock, but uses a second transmitter with a more
narrower beam. The Tracker system uses the same quadrant tracker receiver for both the Standard
tracker transmitter and the Tracker Long Range transmitter. The intensity of the Long Range beam is
much higher, which makes it possible to measure and distinguish between targets at long distances.
The Long Range FineLock is to be used for monitoring applications and static targets. Due to the
geometry of the Long Range FineLock it is necessary to always measure in 2 face mode. In the
following table you will find some guide lines for target spacing.
Range (d) 4 mrad Minimum Target Spacing
250 m / 820 ft 1,0 m / 3,3 ft
800 m / 2625 ft 3,2 m /10,5 ft
1500 m / 4924 ft 6,0 m / 19,7 ft
2500 m / 8202 ft 10,0 m / 32,8 ft
