Remove the
valve
housing attaching bolts and sepa-

rate the
valve
and piston assembly from the steering
gear housing.
Discard the 0 -ring.
Note:
Do
not
put
the ball
nut
apart more
than
40
mm (1.57
in) from the valve housing. Further,
if
the valve and
piston assembly
is
faced downward with the piston set
free, the piston will fall down by its own weight and will
be
damaged or lost. Therefore,
be
sure
to
pay attention
so as
not
to
face
the
valve and piston assembly down-
ward.

- 1. Steering Gear Housing
a. Disassembly
1. Remove the lower seal from the lower end
of
the
housing.
2. Remove the snap ring, spacer washer and upper
seal.
b. Checking
1. Clean the housing thoroughly in clean solvent,
and then blow
it
dry with moisture-free compressed
air.
2.
Inspect the housing for scores in the area where
the ball
nut
and seal moves.
c. Assembly
1.
Dip the seals in gear · lubricant.
2. Apply lubricant
to
the seal bore
of
the housing.
Place the upper seal in the housing with the lip
facing inward.
3. Install the spacer washer and snap ring in the housing.
4. Place the lower seal in the housing with the rubber
side facing out, and press into place.
