7.1 Overview
BACnet communication stands for "Building Automation and Control Networking Protocol". In building equipment, it is
an open protocol that has been standardized for interoperability between systems built by different manufacturers,
and a communication standard for building networks.
Previous air conditioning, lighting, security, and fire protection systems were connected using methods unique to the
building equipment and systems manufacturers. However, conforming to BACnet allows equipment and systems to be
connected and monitored using a common method.
A device connected by BACnet, and a device compatible with BACnet/IP is called a BACnet device.
