ClearKey™
ClearKey is Broadcast Pix’s precise, highly adjustable chromakeyer. Chromakey is
a method of removing a solid background color and replacing it with a different
image. The most common application for chromakey (also called green/blue
screen) is in news/weather production, where a person in front of a blue wall or a
green wall is taped with a video camera, and then using a Chromakey the person
is cut out of the image and placed on a different background, such as a weather
map.
ClearKey handles challenging visuals, such as glass, smoke or fast-moving out of
focus objects and creates more realistic shadow and lighting effects. If a subject
casts a shadow on the background, ClearKey can make the shadow appear on
the virtual set, if desired. A simple eye dropper tool and automatic functions
simplifies color selection, and intuitive controls makes it easy to adjusting lighting,
shadow and spill correction. Robust spill suppression removes stubborn spill from
the chromakeyed objects, while preserving the natural hues of your foreground
image. Source cropping can also be used to confine the keying effect to certain
areas of the screen by removing unwanted material.
When using a chromakey, all controls are accessed through the Source or Keyer
Controls PixPad or through the Fluent Control window on the Multi-View. Also,
when a ClearKey is applied to a source, the chromakey will appear everywhere
that source is applied to, i.e. program, preview, key, etc. Only external live sources
and clips may have ClearKey applied to them.
The most important element to a successful chromakey is even lighting. Not only
do you need to light your subject with standard 3-point lighting (Key, Fill & Back
light) it is also important to evenly light your chromakey wall (the background of
the subject). Once that is accomplished you are now ready to use the ClearKey
feature.
