Handover (HO)
Handover is the term used to describe the uninterrupted changeover between two radio channels
(within a radio cell or to another radio cell)
during a call.
Handover is initiated by the mobile telephone following an event signal (e.g. insufficient signal
reception) and is executed by both the mobile telephone and base station simultaneously.
- Intracell handover (bearer handover) = changing of the carrier frequency and/or time slot
The changeover within a radio cell is referred to as Intracell HO. This is triggered, among other
things, by interference occurring suddenly during a call.
- Intercell handover
A changeover between two radio cells is referred to as Intercell HO.
This is triggered, among other things, by a change in location during an existing connection
(change between two radio cells). An MT subscriber moves into another room, for example,
with better radio conditions from another BS and out of the previous radio cell.
Overload
During an outgoing call request or an incoming call from a BS that may be busy (i.e. four
connections are engaged), an MT changes to a BS with free channels, which also belongs to the
radio network and is within the range of the MT.
Roaming
This term refers to the ability of the MT to deal with both incoming and outgoing calls
regardless of its locations within the DECT radio network in which the MT is logged on. The
calling subscriber does not have to know the location of the mobile subscriber for this.
The necessary requirements for roaming are implemented in the BS. The MT takes initiates the
identification of the location. The BS is not aware as to which MT subscribers are located in its
radio area.
