encapsulation (POS)
To set the Layer 2 encapsulation of an interface, use the encapsulation command in interface configuration
mode. To restore the system to the default encapsulation, use the no form of this command.
encapsulation {hdlc| ppp| frame-relay [ietf] }
no encapsulation [hdlc| ppp| frame-relay [ietf] ]
Syntax Description
Enables Cisco High-Level Data Link Control (cHDLC) encapsulation on the
interface. This is the default encapsulation type.
hdlc
Enables Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) encapsulation on the interface.ppp
Enables Frame Relay encapsuation on the interface.frame -relay
(Optional) Enables RFC1490/RFC2427 encapsulation.ietf
Command Default
For Packet-over-SONET/SDH (POS) interfaces, the default encapsulation is HDLC.

Usage Guidelines
To use this command, you must be in a user group associated with a task group that includes appropriate task
IDs. If the user group assignment is preventing you from using a command, contact your AAA administrator
for assistance.
The task ID hdlc (r,w) is required for use of the keyword hdlc. The task ID ppp(r,w) is required for use of the
keyword ppp. The task ID fr(r,w) is required for use of the keyword frame-relay.
