SERVICE PROCEDURES
POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL CHECK
WARNING: FLUID LEVEL SHOULD BE CHECKED
WITH ENGINE OFF TO PREVENT INJURY FROM
MOVING PARTS. DO NOT USE AUTOMATIC TRANS-
MISSION FLUID IN THE POWER STEERING SYS-
TEM. DO NOT OVERFILL THE POWER STEERING
SYSTEM.
Wipe off the power steering fluid reservoir so that
it is free of dirt (Fig. 8) (Fig. 9). Check the fill level of
the power steering fluid in the reservoir according to
the markings on the side of the reservoir. The MAX.
COLD/MIN. COLD fluid levels are to be measured
with the power steering fluid at a normal ambient
temperature of approximately 32°C to 43°C (90°F to
110°F). In all pumps add fluid as necessary, using
only Mopart Power Steering Fluid, or an equiv-
alent. DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION FLUID.
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
SERVICE WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS
WARNING: POWER STEERING OIL, ENGINE COM-
PONENTS AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM MAY BE
EXTREMELY HOT IF ENGINE HAS BEEN RUNNING.
DO NOT START ENGINE WITH ANY LOOSE OR DIS-
CONNECTED HOSES OR DRIVE BELTS. DO NOT
ALLOW HOSES TO TOUCH HOT EXHAUST MANI-
FOLD OR CATALYST.
CAUTION: While disconnected, cap all open ends
of the power steering fluid hose connections. This
will prevent the entry of foreign material into the
components when power steering hoses are
removed.
POWER STEERING FLUID HOSES (PRESSURE
AND RETURN)
NOTE: On this vehicle the power steering fluid
pressure and return hoses are connected together
by their mounting brackets. For this reason both
hoses need to be removed together if either of the
hoses should fail. Use the procedure below for the
replacement of either power steering fluid hose.
REMOVE
On this vehicle the steering gear needs to be
removed from the crossmember to remove the power
steering hoses from the vehicle.
(1) Remove the battery ground cable from the
ground stud on the shock tower and isolate the
ground cable by installing the cable isolator on the
ground stud (Fig. 10).
(2) Position the front tires of the vehicle so that
they are facing straight ahead.
(3) Raise the vehicle on a frame contact type hoist
until the front tires of the vehicle are just off the
floor. See Hoisting in the Lubrication and Mainte-
nance section of this manual for the required lifting
procedure to be used for this vehicle.
