DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
STEERING COLUMN
DESCRIPTION
This vehicle uses a tilt-type steering column (Fig.
1). Two styles are available, one is for floor shift vehi-
cles and the other is for column shift vehicles.
The steering column used on this vehicle (Fig. 1),
has been designed to be serviced as an assembly; less
wiring, switches, clockspring, gear shift lever, shift
ignition interlock, brake interlock solenoid (column
shift only), shrouds and steering wheel. These compo-
nents can be serviced without removing the steering
column from the vehicle.
BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID
Column shift vehicles have a brake transmission
shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid mounted on the steer-
ing column. The BTSI solenoid works in conjunction
with the brake lamp switch and will not allow the
steering column shift lever to be moved out of the
PARK position without the brake pedal being
applied. For Description And Operation, Diagnosis
And Testing, and Removal And Installation informa-
tion, refer to the Transaxle section in this service
manual.
OPERATION
Turning of the steering wheel mounted to the col-
umn shaft, is transferred down the shaft, through
the upper coupler and intermediate shaft to the
power steering gear pinion shaft. The gear then
moves the front strut assemblies steering the vehicle.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
STEERING COLUMN
For diagnosis of conditions relating to the steering
column, refer to the steering system diagnosis charts
in the diagnosis and testing section at the beginning
of this group.
The steering column MUST be replaced whenever
any of the following conditions exist:
The steering column must be replaced whenever
a vehicle is involved in a collision which deploys the
air bag, regardless of the extent of damage done to
the vehicle.
If a vehicle is involved in an impact of the vehi-
cles front suspension or under carriage, which results
in any type of damage to the front suspension cross-
member.
Under any conditions which result in the steer-
ing column assembly or steering column shaft receiv-
ing a force great enough to move the steering column
or shaft forward of rearward in a vehicle.
STEERING COLUMN INTERMEDIATE SHAFT
The steering column (to steering gear) intermedi-
ate shaft has an integrated lower coupler. The entire
assembly MUST be replaced whenever any of the fol-
lowing conditions exist.
Whenever a vehicle is involved in a collision
which deploys the air bag, regardless of the extent of
damage done to the vehicle.
If a vehicle is involved in an impact of the vehi-
cles front suspension or under carriage, which results
in any type of damage to the front crossmember.
