Chapter 12 Upgrade Cards and Spans
NTP- D374 Upgrade STM-N Cards Manually
Caution Do not perform any other maintenance operations, such as facility or terminal loopbacks, or add any
circuits during a card upgrade.
Note Optical transmit and receive levels must be in their acceptable range as shown in the specifications for
each card in Table 2-4 on page 2-17.
Note • A four-port STM-1 to eight-port STM-1 upgrade, or an STM-4 to four-port STM-4 upgrade can only
be performed in Slots 1 to 4 and Slots 14 to 17. Ensure that the STM-1 or STM-4 card is in any of
these slots before performing a card upgrade to the STM-1-8 or STM-4-4 card. The four STM-1
ports will be mapped to Ports 1 to 4 on the eight-port STM-1 card. The STM-4 port will be mapped
to Port 1 on the four-port STM-4 card.
• When performing a card upgrade from STM-4, STM-16, or MRC-12 to STM-64, ensure that the
STM-4, STM-16, or MRC-12 card is in Slot 4, 5, 6, or 13. Port migrations are described in
Table 12-1.
Step 1 Determine the type of upgrade you need to perform and make sure you have the necessary cards. Valid
card upgrades include:
• Four-port STM-1 to eight-port STM-1
• Single-port STM-4 to four-port STM-4, STM-16, or STM-64
• STM-16 to STM-64IO or STM-64 Any Reach
• MRC-12 to STM-64IO or STM-64 Any Reach (Port 1 is the only provisioned port on the MRC-12
card)
