Overview
TheLinkLayerDiscoveryProtocol(LLPD)issimilartotheEnterasysDiscoveryProtocolandthe
CiscoDiscoveryProtocolinthatitprovidesanind ustrystandard,vendor‐neutralwaytoallow
networkdevicestoadvertisetheiridentitiesandcapabilitiesonalocalareanetwork,andto
discoverthatinformationabouttheirneighbors.
LLDP‐MEDisanenhancementtoLLDPthatprovidesthefol lowing benefits:
•Extendedanda utoma tedpowermanagementofPoweroverEthernetendpoints
•Inventorymanagement,allowingnetworkadministratorstotracktheirnetworkdevicesand
todeterminetheircharacteristics,suchasmanufacturer,softwareandhardwareversions,and
serialorassetnumbers
Theinformationsent
byanLLDP‐enableddeviceisextractedandtabulatedbyitspeers.The
communicationcanbedonewheninformationchangesoronaperiodicbasis.Theinformation
tabulatedisagedtoensurethatitiskeptuptodate.Portscanbeconfiguredtosendthis
information,receivethisinformation,or
bothsendandreceive.
EitherLLDPorLLDP‐MED,butnotboth,canbeusedonaninterfacebetweentwodevices.A
switchportusesLLDP‐MEDwhenitdetectsthatanLLDP‐MED‐capabledeviceisconnectedtoit.
