DHCP Server Configuration
ThischapterdescribesthecommandstoconfiguretheIPv4DHCPserverfunctionalityona
SecureStackC2switch.
DHCP Overview
DynamicHostConfigurationProtocol(DHCP)forIPv4isanetworklayerprotocolthat
implementsautomaticormanualassignmentofIPaddressesandotherconfigurationinformation
toclientdevicesbyservers.ADHCPservermanagesauserconfiguredpoolofIPaddressesfrom
whichitcanmakeassignmentsuponclientrequests.A
relayagentpassesDHCPmessages
betweenclientsandserverswhichareondifferentphysicalsubnets.
DHCP Relay Agent
TheDHCP/BOOTPrelayagentfunctioncanbeconfiguredonalloftheSecureStackC2’srouting
interfaces.TherelayagentcanforwardaDHCPclient’srequesttoaDHCPserverlocatedona
differentnetworkiftheaddressoftheserverisconfiguredasahelperaddressonthereceiving
interface.The
relayagentinterfacemustbeaVLANwhichisconfiguredwithanIPaddress.Refer
totheiphelperaddresscommand(“iphelperaddressonpage 1612)formoreinformation.
DHCP Server
DHCPserverfunctionalityallowstheSecureStackC2switchtoprovidebasicIPconfiguration
informationtoaclientonthenetworkwhorequestssuchinformationusing theDHCPprotocol.
DHCPprovidesthefollowingmechanismsforIPaddressallocationbyaDHCPserver:
Automatic—DHCPserverassignsanIPaddresstoaclientfor
alimitedperiodoftime(or
untiltheclientexplicitlyrelinquishestheaddress)fromadefinedpoolofIPaddresses
configuredontheserver.
•ManualAclient’sIPaddressisassignedbythenetworkadministrator,andDHCPisused
simplytoconveytheassignedaddresstotheclient.Thisismanagedby
meansof“static”
addresspoolsconfiguredontheserver.
