tion, and helps you to find out the information related to a front panel key, a functional
block, or other interactive element of the user interface.
This description follows the decisions you likely take when you consider a new test
setup or a signal generation task, starting from selecting of a suitable configuration and
deciding upon necessary external equipment. The description then respects the signal
generation functions along the signal generation flow. It begins with the signal source
and signal in the baseband domain, followed by the I/Q modulation and the functions
affecting the signal in the RF domain (see Figure C-2).
1.5.1 Overview of the Instrument Functions and the Related Description
Getting Started
The section resembles the information that you have received as a printed book
together with your instrument.
Signal Routing and System Configuration
The R&S SMW supports versatile MIMO configurations and a flexible way to define the
signal source, the signal routing, and the way the signal is output from the instrument.
A selected "Taskbar > System Config > System Configuration" influences the signal
processing and reflects not only on the displayed block diagram but also in the provi-
ded settings.
Therefore, the description begins with Chapter 3, "Signal Routing and System Configu-
ration", on page 122. The scope of this section is:
The explanation of the signal routing possibilities of the instrument
The description of the provided "System Configuration" settings
The overview of the instrument input and output signals and description of the set-
tings provided by the "Baseband Input", "I/Q Analog" and "I/Q Digital" blocks.
Configuring the Internal Baseband Source
The "Baseband" block is the access point to the functions of the internal baseband sig-
nal source.
The R&S SMW offers various possibilities for generating digitally modulated signals in
compliance with the definitions of digital standards or with user-defined characteristics.
The range of software options for this is being extended continuously.
The scope of Chapter 4, "Configuring the Internal Baseband Source", on page 220 is:
The "Baseband" block and its functions for generation of digitally modulated sig-
nals, the arbitrary waveform generator, the multi-carrier continuous wave genera-
tion
The functions accessed via the "AWGN" block
Theoretical and background information on the characteristics and handling of
baseband signals.
