MANUAL VERSION 11.0 – May 2008
E-Mail Gateway
5. E-MAIL GATEWAY
5.1 To read a complete explanation of the E-Mail Gateway and the Unified Messaging OSE
features, refer to the latest version of the Unified Messaging Open Standards Edition Adminis-
trators Guide (document part no. 835.3162).
5.2 For the E-Mail Gateway to function, its service must be able to log on to the network as
a user. Program the E-Mail System field first, as described below.
5.3 To use the TTS functionality to convert e-mail messages to voice mail messages, the E-
mail Gateway must be configured and each mailbox user must have an e-mail reader profile.
This profile contains the information that EM requires to access the correct e-mail server and
e-mail account.
5.4 E-Mail System: This system-wide field specifies the type of e-mail system that will be
used to transfer messages. The value programmed in this field must correspond to the cus-
tomers underlying e-mail system. For example, if the customers e-mail system is Lotus
Notes, this field should be programmed to VIM. This field can be programmed to NONE,
MAPI, VIM, or SMTP/POP3. Note that for an EM system, the system only supports SMTP/
POP3 E-mails systems. If it is programmed to NONE, the E-Mail Gateway feature is disabled
for the entire voice mail system. The default value for this field is NONE. To select the E-Mail
system, select the drop-down list box and scroll to the desired value. Then press
ENTER or
click on another field to save the change.
5.5 The other fields that need to be programmed depend on the E-Mail System selected:
If the E-Mail System field is programmed to MAPI or VIM, only the E-Mail Username
and E-Mail Password fields need to be programmed.
If the E-Mail System is programmed to SMTP/POP3, the E-Mail SMTP Server and E-
Mail Address fields must also be programmed, in addition to the username and pass-
word fields. The E-Mail Real Name field is optional when using SMTP/POP3.
5.6 E-Mail Address: This field specifies the Voice Processing Unit’s e-mail address. It is
only required if the E-Mail System field is programmed to SMTP/POP3. When the voice mail
PC sends an e-mail message, this address will be used as the e-mail address in the “Reply-To”
field of the e-mail header. This is the address at which the voice mail PC will receive e-mail
messages. This field can contain up to 127 characters and it is empty by default. For example,
this field might look like johndoe@inter-tel.com. To enter the address click on the Value and
enter the address in the text box. If you enter an invalid character (: ; " \ | ( ) , < > ‘), an error
tone occurs. Then press
ENTER or click on another field to save your change.
NOTE: While this address can contain a “familiar” name, using SMTP, this should be a prop-
erly formatted E-mail address to avoid presenting a Reply-To e-mail address without a domain
name and potentially being perceived as spam.
5.7 E-Mail Real Name: This field specifies the Voice Processing Unit’s user name (such
as VOICE MAIL). It is only programmable if the E-Mail System field is programmed to
SMTP/POP3 and it is optional. When the voice mail PC sends an e-mail message, this name
will be included in the FROM field of the e-mail header. This field can contain up to 127 char-
acters, and it is empty by default. To enter the name, click on the Value and enter the address
in the text box. Then press
ENTER or click on another field to save your change.
